perder. Esta vez frente al Rayo. ¿Pero qué más da? Al fin y al cabo, es sólo
fútbol.
Worry. This is what torments me
since a radical supporter of Deportivo de la Coruña died last Sunday. And it is
not due to the death but the context in which it took place and some of the
answers that it has generated.
As I have said, the death itself
does not keep me awake because, considering the circumstances, it was something
likely. During the Middle Ages or the Wild West, if two people made an
appointment to duel, the most likely outcome was the death of one of them. They
knew what was going to happen. So now, if two sides set a date to spend the
hours before a football match striking each other with iron bars, the
possibility of a fatal ending exists.
But the context worries me. I am
concerned that fanatics of football teams politicize their activity. I am
concerned that they find a parapet in football. Their impunity worries me. And
I am concerned that people involved in football think this is far beyond them.
Because Cerezo was quick to say that these acts had nothing to do with
“Atleti” or Deportivo, whereas Simeone
said that the problem belongs to society. For me, these comments are as
alarming as if politicians said that the problem of corruption belongs to
society, or as if the Church said that the problem of pederasty belongs to
society. Society: that being that swallows and digests responsibilities. As if
football –or politics or religion– existed at a different level from the one of
society, as if what happens in it was not of enormous importance for that far
multitude that forms society.
The fight did not take place in
the context of a Formula 1 Championship or because of a bullfight. It took
place because two football teams played a match a few hours later. And football
must be conclusive. If rubbish does not leave football, football will become
rubbish finally.
By the way, Almería lost again, this time against Rayo. But what differrence does it make? It is just football after all.
