After the adventure of the windmills, don
Quijote’s big worry focused on recovering the spear he destroyed when crashing
into the first imaginary giant. His honour was hurt but, inside his head, the
need of looking for new great feats had already settled down. This is what
heroism, impulsiveness during the battle or unequal fights present. And
football has something of each of them.
This week, Almería has showed the budget of
the current season, which is about 25 million euros, and in it the club has to
find the tools that allow it to face gigantic clubs. Politics, for the sake of
the show, has been looking for systems to eliminate some of the steps that
separate the teams of the league for a long time now. To understand how it is
doing this, we would have to break down the sources that prove their incomes.
In the case of Almería, 18 million euros correspond to television rights, a bit
less than 2 million euros are provided by the supporters by means of the
payment of their season-tickets and the rest –around 5–, is due to different
sources such as advertising or merchandising. As can be seen, for a little club
as ours, television can mean up to 75% of the income whereas for the big teams,
with a large social framework supporting them, television barely means 25% of
the income.
Usually, modest teams do not raise their
voices. This is better than nothing. And a league without the two big teams
would almost make their television rights disappear. But here is, as I said
before, where politics comes into the picture. It is preparing a Royal Decree
to balance the distribution. By means of this Decree, all the clubs of the
first division will divide up half of the money of television –around 500
million euros– whereas the another half will be distributed according to
historical and sports reasons. But for that, we will have to wait a couple of
seasons yet but, perhaps, mills are not so gigantic by this time.
