In football,
unless you have in your team the wild excellence of someone like Cristiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi –athletes that go beyond the
playing field–, it is assumed that it is more important to get a strong group
rather than trust the brilliances of certain players. Because the sum of
everybody is what really makes the whole solid. And the allegation of really
notable and different personalities of the world of football such as, to give
just an example, Alfredo Di Stefano and
Luis Aragonés usually deals with
that point. A sentence of each one summarizes this philosophy. The first one,
by ‘La Saeta Rubia,’ said that “nobody is as good as the group.” And the second
one, by ‘El Sabio de Hortaleza,’ would mean that he took “a national team and
left a group,” in reference to the group with which he won the European
Championship in 2008. And getting away from that speech is audacious and
dangerous because this sport, at short intervals, brings evidence into the open.
Some days ago, Francisco used this line of argument to
show his happiness and urge caution at the same time, which is another key
principle of each coach because it is well known that football punishes those
who cover themselves in satisfaction. And he urged caution while praising the
team, with manners of a good coach. His reflection presents little duplicity.
He is not a coach as Juanma Lillo
–an Almería’s former coach– with a deep philosophy and solemn sentences, but he
usually does not make a mistake concerning the message. And this time, he
speaks about prudence and the power of the group.
And he does this
clinging to statistics because only Barcelona and Valencia have let fewer goals
in than Almería, after seven days of competition, because the team has six
points more than at the same moment of the previous league, because it has
settled in the middle part of the table comfortably and because feelings are
not bad. But Francisco knows that
everything can change from one day to the other. That is why he asks to calm
down. That is why he asks for unity.
